Bill Nighy has added a new trophy to a career already stacked with accolades, but this one comes from an unexpected corner of the entertainment world. The veteran actor was named best host at the British Podcast Awards, triumphing over a shortlist that included some of the biggest names in broadcasting and comedy.

The 76-year-old, whose screen credits range from Love Actually and Living to the Underworld franchise, picked up the honour for Ill-Advised, the series in which he offers wry counsel to listeners and reflects on subjects close to his heart. Award organisers described the show as an "irresistibly endearing series," a phrase that captures the gentle, rumination-heavy tone that has clearly resonated with both critics and audiences.

Ill-Advised is marketed with a self-deprecating pitch: it is, in the show's own framing, a podcast for people who don't get out much and can't handle it when they do. That premise places Nighy in the role of an agony uncle, dispensing advice and meandering thoughtfully through matters of life, music and literature. It is a format that leans heavily on the host's personality, and Nighy's established public persona, dry, courteous and quietly amused by the world, appears to have translated neatly to the intimacy of audio.

The victory is notable because the best host category was fiercely contested. Nighy saw off competition from Louis Theroux, Katherine Ryan and Lily Allen, a trio representing documentary film-making, stand-up comedy and pop music respectively. Each has built a substantial podcast following, making the actor's win a genuine upset and a reminder that podcasting's most prized skill, the ability to hold a listener's attention through conversation alone, is not the exclusive property of those who came up through the medium.

It also marks a productive year for Nighy's audio ambitions. The British Podcast Awards recognition follows his success at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards in March, where Ill-Advised was named podcast of the year. Two significant prizes from two different bodies of voters suggest the show's appeal is not a fluke but a sustained critical consensus.

Thursday's ceremony was the tenth edition of the British Podcast Awards, a milestone that reflects how far the medium has travelled since it was regarded as a niche spin-off of traditional radio. Over that decade, podcasting has grown into a crowded and commercially significant landscape, with major publishers, independent production houses and celebrity newcomers all competing for listening time.

The prizes were spread across a wide field, with several winners collecting more than one award. Pete Wicks enjoyed a particularly strong night, with his series Man Made taking both best interview podcast and best health and wellbeing podcast. The show sets out to unpack modern masculinity, a theme that has become increasingly prominent in public discussion, and its double recognition suggests it is finding an engaged audience among listeners grappling with shifting expectations around manhood.

Sean Bean, another actor who has turned to audio, also claimed a pair of awards. His birdwatching series Get Birding was named best lifestyle podcast and also took the prize for best video innovation. The latter category acknowledges that podcasts increasingly exist as visual products as well, with clips and full video editions distributed across social platforms to attract new listeners.

The evening's highest honour went elsewhere. Hold or Fold, a series about problem gambling produced by the Prison Radio Association, was crowned best podcast overall and also won best factual podcast. The double win is a striking endorsement of the association's work, which trains people in prison to make radio and has long been praised for producing content with a distinctive perspective and social purpose. A programme about gambling harm, made within the prison system, carries an authenticity that few mainstream productions can replicate.

Audience power was recognised too. The Listeners' Choice award, decided by public vote, went to Hard Launch with Dan & Phil, hosted by the YouTube veterans Dan Howell and Phil Lester. Their fanbase, built over years of online video, demonstrated its mobilising strength by carrying the show to victory in a category that reflects raw popularity rather than jury assessment.

Elsewhere on the winners' list, Alan Carr and Lee Peart were honoured for Bottoms Up!, their comedy and wine series, which won best food and drink podcast. Peter Crouch's football show, That Peter Crouch Podcast, took the sport category, while Sky News and Tortoise shared recognition for The Wargame in the news, politics and current affairs field. The BBC World Service was named best network or publisher, and BBC productions featured across history, impact and Welsh language categories.

The breadth of the roll of honour illustrates how far podcasting has fragmented into specialist niches. Categories now cover everything from business, education and fiction to sex and relationships, parenting and true crime. There are awards for daily podcasts, documentary podcasts and new podcasts, as well as a rising star prize, which this year went to Georgie Styles.

For Nighy, the win represents an unusual late-career pivot. He remains best known for his screen work, and his distinctive voice has long been one of his signatures, lending itself naturally to narration and audio performance. Moving from that to the more exposing role of host, fielding listeners' problems and offering unhurried reflections, is a different discipline entirely. The award suggests he has made the transition convincingly, and that the appetite for his company, in headphones at least, shows no sign of fading.
