Helen Jenner Emerges as Frontrunner to Take Helm of Reform UK in Wales

Helen Jenner is poised to take over the leadership of Reform UK’s Welsh operation following the abrupt resignation of Dan Thomas, according to senior political sources. The Bangor Conwy Môn Member of the Senedd (MS) has emerged as the clear favourite among party figures looking to stabilise the group’s parliamentary presence in Cardiff Bay following days of acute internal turbulence.

High-ranking figures within the party hierarchy have reportedly thrown their backing behind Jenner, who has already assumed the role of interim Welsh leader. Having previously operated as Thomas's deputy, she represents a continuity figure within the Senedd group, offering institutional familiarity at a time when the party is facing intense public scrutiny over its management and leadership structure.

The sudden vacancy at the top of Reform Wales arose after Thomas stood down from the leadership over the weekend. His resignation was triggered by his arrest on suspicion of assault and controlling coercive behaviour. Thomas was subsequently released on police bail while investigations into the allegations continue, leaving the party’s Welsh leadership structure vacant and prompting urgent discussions about succession.

Despite stepping down from the leadership post, Thomas has maintained that he is innocent of any wrongdoing. He has not been suspended from Reform UK’s parliamentary group and continues to sit as an active Member of the Senedd representing the Casnewydd Islwyn constituency. However, the nature of the allegations rendered his continued position as the party's standard-bearer in Wales politically untenable.

The path for Jenner's formal elevation appears to have cleared significantly over recent days as other potential contenders chose not to enter the contest. Health spokesperson James Evans announced on Wednesday that he would not seek the post, despite claiming to have secured majority support among his colleagues in the Senedd group. Evans cited discussions with his family as the decisive factor in choosing to bypass the leadership opening.

The leadership field narrowed further when the party's chief whip, Llŷr Powell, confirmed to BBC Wales that he had ruled himself out of the running. With key figures stepping aside, Jenner faces minimal visible resistance within the parliamentary cohort, consolidating her status as the undisputed frontrunner to assume the permanent leadership.

Jenner has not yet delivered a public address outlining her formal intentions or platform for the Welsh leadership. However, party insiders indicate that the momentum behind her appointment is substantial, with senior colleagues viewing her steady progression from deputy leader to interim head as the most straightforward resolution to the ongoing leadership vacuum.

Under the party’s internal selection rules, any formal contest will be determined exclusively within the Senedd chamber rather than through a wider democratic mandate. Should more than one candidate formally submit their nomination, the leadership will be decided through a secret ballot conducted solely among Reform MSs, completely bypassing the wider party membership across Wales.

The succession process marks a distinct shift from the appointment mechanism that initially placed Thomas at the helm. Thomas had been personally appointed to lead the Welsh party by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in February, highlighting the central control historically exercised by the party's national leadership over its devolved branches.

Jenner brings a distinct regional and professional background to the prospective leadership role. A former English teacher, she was born in the south Wales industrial town of Neath and later grew up on the island of Anglesey in north Wales. This geographic spread, combined with her status as a fluent Welsh speaker, gives her a unique profile within the party’s parliamentary contingent in Cardiff Bay.

Her political journey began well before the establishment of Reform UK's current presence in the Senedd. Jenner previously ran as a candidate for the Brexit Party during the 2019 UK general election, having earlier been an active member of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) during Nigel Farage’s tenure as leader of that movement.

Jenner has previously spoken openly about how Farage served as the primary catalyst for her entry into active politics. During an appearance on the BBC Walescast podcast, she recounted how encountering Farage’s passionate speeches and viral video clips in the European Parliament first engaged her interest in political debate, prompting her initial decision to join the movement.

Reflecting on that early inspiration, Jenner noted that Farage’s energetic parliamentary performances had transformed her perception of public life, remarking that she had never previously seen anyone so animated in political debate. She explained that she perceived him as genuinely principled, which ultimately motivated her to care deeply about national and devolved politics.

Her time in frontline Welsh politics has also drawn cultural and ideological friction. Speaking on the Walescast podcast during the summer, Jenner addressed the hostility she has encountered from critics on internet platforms who claimed that her affiliation with Reform UK meant she had no right to attend the National Eisteddfod, despite her heritage and fluency in the Welsh language.

As Reform UK prepares to formalise its next chapter in the Senedd, Jenner’s expected accession will place her at the forefront of the party’s legislative and political strategy in Wales. With the group seeking to move past the fallout from Thomas's arrest, her transition into the permanent leadership role will test the cohesion and resilience of the party's parliamentary wing.
