Joe Manchin Backs Republican Candidates in Critical Senate Contests in Maine and Michigan

Former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin has publicly declared his support for two Republican contenders in key Senate battleground races, signaling his continued focus on promoting centrist figures in national politics. The Democrat-turned-independent revealed his backing for the candidates during a televised appearance on Monday, weighing in on contests that will play a pivotal role in deciding which party controls the chamber.

Appearing in an interview on CNBC, Manchin threw his weight behind incumbent Senator Susan Collins of Maine and former Representative Mike Rogers of Michigan. With control of the Senate hanging in the balance, both battleground campaigns are regarded as essential to the Republican Party's broader strategy to defend and retain its majority in the upper chamber.

Manchin spoke with particular warmth regarding Collins, arguing that her presence in Washington is essential to maintaining institutional balance. He remarked that losing lawmakers like Collins equates to losing the soul of the Senate, describing her as an accessible colleague who consistently seeks to do the right thing, while confirming his willingness to personally campaign on her behalf.

Collins warmly embraced the endorsement, quickly publicizing Manchin’s comments across her social media accounts and issuing a formal news release. Expressing that she was honored by his backing, Collins characterized the former West Virginia senator as a trusted colleague and close personal friend with whom she had frequently collaborated to craft bipartisan solutions for Maine and the country.

The endorsement comes as Collins wages a competitive battle for a sixth term in Maine, a state that Donald Trump has lost on three separate occasions. Her Democratic opponent in the general election is former state Senate President Troy Jackson, who entered the contest as a replacement on the ballot following the exit of previous Democratic nominee Graham Platner.

Manchin’s backing of Collins reflects a long-standing alliance that transcends traditional party lines. Even while serving as an elected Democrat in the Senate, Manchin previously broke ranks with his party to endorse and support Collins during her last successful reelection campaign.

Turning his attention to the open Senate contest in Michigan, Manchin spoke highly of Mike Rogers, identifying him as a close personal acquaintance. While noting that he had not issued a formal endorsement in the race, Manchin openly stated his clear support for the former Republican lawmaker, praising him as a quality individual who would serve effectively in the Senate.

The Michigan race features a sharp ideological contrast, with Rogers competing against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, a prominent and outspoken progressive. When prompted by the program's host about the matchup, Manchin voiced his distinct preference for Rogers over the progressive challenger.

Despite his praise for Rogers, Manchin outlined a specific political hurdle the Republican candidate must overcome. Manchin emphasized that Rogers will ultimately need to publicly denounce Donald Trump’s trade agenda if he intends to secure victory in Michigan, noting that Rogers has not taken that step and observing that onlookers will simply have to wait and see how the campaign develops.

During the interview, Manchin grouped Collins and Rogers alongside Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, commending the trio as free-thinking, independent-minded Republicans. He praised them for avoiding ideological extremes and staying grounded between the far right and the far left.

Murkowski, who has similarly built a reputation for moderate positioning in the Senate, is not on the ballot in the upcoming November election cycle, as her current seat will not be contested again until 2028.

Manchin's latest endorsements reflect the independent political path he has charted in recent years. After serving in the Senate from 2010 to 2025, Manchin chose to leave the Democratic Party during the final months of his legislative tenure, explaining his departure by arguing that the national Democratic brand had grown increasingly toxic.

Since concluding his Senate career, Manchin has maintained an active role in national political affairs. In July, he introduced a nationwide campaign aimed at identifying, recruiting, and electing independent candidates to political office to curb hyperpartisanship in government.

The races where Manchin is exerting his influence remain extremely competitive heading into the final stretch of the election cycle. According to recent CNN polling data released on Wednesday, neither the Maine nor the Michigan Senate contest has a clear front-runner, with likely voters divided nearly evenly in both key battlegrounds.

With the outcome in both states poised to be decided by razor-thin margins, Manchin’s public backing provides a notable cross-party boost to both Republican campaigns as they attempt to win over independent and moderate voters before Election Day.
