Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed Faces Backlash Over 9/11 Tribute and Ties to Controversial Streamer

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, has ignited a fierce political firestorm across social media following the release of his annual September 11 memorial message. The progressive political figure drew swift and forceful condemnation from Republican officials, digital strategists, and conservative commentators who criticized his past rhetoric and continued association with controversial political figures.

The controversy began after El-Sayed published a commemorative video and statement on his official X account to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. In the post, the candidate offered reflections on the broader national significance of the tragedy, describing the historic attack as an assault that went well beyond physical destruction and loss of life.

In his message, El-Sayed stated that the perpetrators did not merely carry out an attack on America itself, but targeted the very idea of America. He characterized the nation as one brought together by foundational ideals, defined as a place where the commitment to justice and personal freedom binds the public together, even during moments when the country struggles to fully realize those values. He concluded the post by honoring the victims who were killed in what he described as a terrible act of terrorism.

Despite the conventional framing of the commemorative remarks, conservative critics immediately turned the focus toward El-Sayed’s ongoing relationship and political appearances alongside progressive political commentator and live-streamer Hasan Piker. The alignment between the two figures quickly became the central focal point of the online backlash against the Senate hopeful.

Piker has repeatedly attracted intense public scrutiny for a series of inflammatory public remarks, most notably a viral past assertion in which he claimed that the United States deserved the September 11 attacks. Piker also sparked outrage by referring to Israel as a "Jewish ISIS," prompting political opponents to frequently tie El-Sayed directly to the streamer's controversial public positions.

Online reactions to El-Sayed’s memorial tribute were swift and severe. The prominent conservative social media account Libs of TikTok, known for spotlighting key cultural and social controversies, posted a direct response to El-Sayed’s video, bluntly labeling the Democratic candidate a fraud.

Steve Guest, a frequent political commentator and former staffer for Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, joined the wave of criticism by sharing an image of El-Sayed standing alongside Piker. Challenging the sincerity of El-Sayed’s tribute, Guest included a caption referencing another controversial remark from Piker in which the streamer stated that he hated America and expressed pride in stating it openly.

Republican political consultant Ryan Girdusky also offered a scathing assessment of the candidate's post on X. Girdusky argued that actively campaigning with an individual who claimed the country deserved the terrorist attacks constituted brazen dishonesty, criticizing El-Sayed's character for presenting a patriotic tribute while maintaining close ties to Piker.

The official campaign apparatus for Senate Republicans swiftly amplified the criticism. Joanna Rodriguez, the communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, called El-Sayed a disgrace and accused him of consistently refusing to disavow an ally who justified the attacks. Rodriguez went on to allege that the candidate had historically diminished the significance of the lives lost while providing excuses and sympathy for terrorists.

Additional criticism came from GOP digital strategist Mike Hahn, who took aim at the delivery of the message by remarking on El-Sayed reading from a script. At the same time, Joey Mannarino, the co-founder of the right-wing media group Overton Institute, expressed disbelief at El-Sayed’s competitive standing in the Michigan race, describing the candidate as an extremist who should not be representing the state in the Senate.

The renewed focus on the relationship between the two progressive figures stems in part from previous joint events, including an April campaign rally held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Photographs from the event showed Piker and El-Sayed conversing in a green room before addressing a crowd of progressive supporters on the university campus.

In previous instances where his ties to Piker came under public scrutiny, El-Sayed has sought to distance his official platform from the streamer's rhetoric. Following Piker's controversial comments regarding Israel, El-Sayed explicitly noted that he does not endorse all of Piker's views, reiterating that no outside personality speaks for his Senate campaign other than himself and his designated campaign spokesperson.

El-Sayed has also attempted to redirect public attention away from online controversies toward domestic policy matters. The candidate previously argued that while opposing politicians and media pundits attempt to center the Senate race around an internet personality, his campaign remains dedicated to addressing core voter concerns in Michigan, such as the cost of groceries, gasoline prices, local public education, and healthcare access.

Meanwhile, media observers highlighted notable structural differences between El-Sayed’s recent post and his prior anniversary statements. Chuck Ross, an investigative reporter with The Washington Free Beacon, pointed out that El-Sayed’s latest message stuck strictly to commemorating the September 11 attacks from a teleprompter, omitting the broader critiques regarding the aftermath of the global War on Terror that had frequently characterized his past anniversary commentary.
