Rep. Ilhan Omar Remains Silent Following Police Search of Son's Shared Minneapolis Residence

United States Representative Ilhan Omar avoided answering questions from reporters on Capitol Hill regarding a recent law enforcement search executed at the Minneapolis home shared by her son and a roommate with a felony record. The search, which uncovered multiple firearms and rounds of ammunition, has generated intense public interest and raised questions regarding the associations of the congresswoman’s family.

The Minneapolis Police Department carried out the search on August 25 at the residence occupied by Omar's 20-year-old son, Adnan Hirsi, and his 22-year-old roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi. Law enforcement officers entered the property pursuant to a search warrant and discovered a cache of weapons and ammunition stored inside the shared living space.

The sequence of events leading to the residential raid began during a standard traffic stop conducted by local authorities. Police officers pulled over Abdi and determined that he was operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver's license or required proof of insurance.

Following the initial roadside stop, law enforcement impounded the vehicle and initially permitted Abdi to leave the scene. However, a subsequent inventory of the impounded vehicle led to the discovery of a concealed firearm, triggering an expanded criminal investigation into the matter.

Under federal and state law, individuals who have been convicted of a felony are strictly prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Because Abdi is a convicted felon, the discovery of a weapon inside the impounded vehicle provided investigators with the legal justification needed to secure a judicial search warrant for the property he shared with Hirsi.

Abdi carries an extensive history of interactions with the criminal justice system, having been arrested on ten separate occasions in the past. Among his prior legal troubles is a felony speeding conviction stemming from a 2024 incident during which he was apprehended for operating a vehicle at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

Following the August residential search, Abdi was taken into custody and formally charged with an illegal weapons offense. Court records indicate that he was released from detention the day after his arrest as proceedings in his case continue to move forward.

Authorities have emphasized that neither Hirsi nor Representative Omar has been charged with any crime or accused of unlawful conduct in connection with the weapons found on the premises. Nonetheless, the presence of illegal firearms in the residence has brought renewed public and political attention to the congresswoman's household.

When approached by journalists as she traversed the corridors of the Capitol complex, Omar declined to provide any details regarding the incident. Reporters pressed the Minnesota lawmaker on when she learned of the police raid and what knowledge she possessed regarding the circumstances that triggered the law enforcement response.

Omar continued walking in silence without acknowledging the inquiries as reporters asked additional follow-up questions. Among the inquiries was whether she planned to advise her son to find alternative housing arrangements away from his roommate to avoid further legal entanglements.

Attempts to obtain an official statement from the lawmaker's congressional staff were unsuccessful. Her office did not immediately provide a response to formal media inquiries seeking clarification on the matter and her son's living arrangements.

Omar represents Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, a strongly Democratic constituency that encompasses Minneapolis and surrounding communities. She is currently campaigning to secure another term representing the district in the United States House of Representatives.

The congresswoman has maintained a high-profile presence in national politics since her historic election, having entered Congress as a Somali refugee and becoming the first woman to wear a hijab on the House floor. Her tenure has frequently drawn significant national media attention and intense scrutiny from political opponents.

The discovery of firearms at her son's home stands in sharp contrast to Omar’s public policy positions on gun violence prevention. Throughout her legislative career, the progressive lawmaker has advocated for strict national firearm regulations, including measures to close the gun show loophole and federal red-flag legislation designed to keep weapons away from individuals who pose a threat to community safety.

This is not the first occasion on which the congresswoman's son has been mentioned in relation to interactions with law enforcement. Omar previously disclosed that her U.S.-born son was stopped by Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel during an encounter in Minnesota on December 13.

As the legal proceedings involving Abdi continue to develop in local court, Omar has maintained her silence regarding the raid on her son's shared home, offering no public comment on the matter.
