Massachusetts Senate Race Heats Up as Young Democrats Divided Over Markey's Age and AI Knowledge

The race for the Democratic nomination in the Massachusetts Senate has taken a unique turn, with the age of incumbent Senator Ed Markey, 80, becoming a central issue. U.S. Representative Seth Moulton, 47, is challenging Markey, arguing that the senator's age makes him unsuitable for another term. Moulton's campaign has highlighted Markey's apparent lack of understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) as a sign of his disconnect from modern issues.

In a recent debate, Markey was asked about his use of AI platforms like Claude or ChatGPT in his work. His response, which suggested he uses whatever is available on his iPhone or iPad without knowing the specifics of the companies behind them, has been seized upon by Moulton's camp. Arsen Bagdassarian, an 18-year-old Markey supporter, expressed his disappointment, stating, "To be frank, I didn't expect him to be as clueless as he really was on that topic."

Despite the concerns raised by Moulton, Markey has a strong base of young supporters. Matt Kelly, president of the UMass Lowell College Democrats, acknowledges that Markey's answer was less than ideal but emphasizes the importance of governance over technology knowledge. "I'll admit it wasn't a good answer," Kelly said, "but I care less about whether Markey knows how to use the latest technology than whether he understands how to govern it."

Many of Markey's younger supporters argue that his longevity in politics is an asset. They point to his voting record, such as his 2002 vote against the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, which later led to the formation of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Milan van Dam, national chair of the High School Democrats of America, believes that generational leadership is more about consistency than age.

The debate over Markey's age and technology knowledge has become a focal point in the Democratic primary, with both sides presenting contrasting visions of leadership. Moulton's campaign has highlighted his relative youth and his perceived ability to represent a generation that didn't exist when Markey first entered Congress 50 years ago. "Just because he has a younger face doesn't mean that he has younger ideas," Kelly commented on Moulton's campaign.

Markey has won endorsements from prominent progressives, including U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who have praised his commitment to progressive policies. However, the question of whether his age is a liability remains a contentious topic among young Democrats in Massachusetts.

As the primary approaches, the debate over Markey's age and his grasp of modern technology issues is likely to intensify. The outcome of the primary could have significant implications for the future of the Democratic Party in Massachusetts and beyond. Whether voters prioritize experience and policy consistency over perceived modernity remains to be seen.
