Tributes have poured in following the tragic death of prominent Welsh business leader and charity trustee Owain Davies, who was killed alongside two other people in a light aircraft crash in the Swiss Alps. The 55-year-old executive from west Wales was widely known for his leadership of the Carmarthenshire engineering company Amcanu and his extensive contributions to regional community organizations.
The fatal incident took place on a Tuesday when a Cirrus SR22T light airplane encountered difficulties and crashed high within the mountainous terrain near the alpine resort town of Leukerbad, situated in the southern Swiss canton of Valais. Davies was confirmed to be among the three fatalities aboard the flight, prompting widespread grief among his relatives, colleagues, and the wider Welsh community.
According to Swiss emergency officials and local authorities, the light aircraft had departed from Sion airport, located along the Rhône Valley. Only about ten minutes after takeoff, the aircraft crashed directly into a mountain slope for reasons that have not yet been determined, leading to immediate emergency mobilizations across the rugged region.
The response to the disaster involved significant resources from across the canton. Specialist personnel from the Valais Rescue Organisation were dispatched to the site alongside regional police officers and local firefighters, supported by a fleet of three emergency helicopters. Eyewitnesses in the surrounding alpine area reported observing plumes of smoke and signs of fire rising from the mountainside shortly after the impact.
Formal identification procedures remain ongoing for the other two individuals who lost their lives in the disaster. Authorities have verified that another British national was among the deceased passengers on board, though their identity has not yet been formally released to the public.
Following the confirmation of his death, Davies’s family expressed their profound heartbreak. His son, Aron Davies, stated that the family had suffered an unimaginable loss, paying tribute to his father's boundless energy, resilience, and unwavering optimism. He described his father as a driven and determined individual who approached every challenge with the firm belief that no problem was ever too large or complex to be overcome.
Reflecting on their personal and professional bond, Aron Davies characterized his father as a genuine character who left behind an enduring legacy. He noted that his father had served as an indispensable mentor throughout his life, both in their personal relationship and in commercial ventures, adding that many employees across their manufacturing business would similarly feel the profound void left by the loss of a trusted leader and guide.
Amcanu, the Burry Port-based engineering enterprise where Davies served as managing director, issued an official statement marking his passing with profound sadness. The company praised the executive’s distinctive spirit, noting that he was widely regarded as a strong-willed, spirited, determined, and deeply caring figure who left an indelible mark on the business and its workforce.
The company's tribute emphasized that family remained the central pillar of Davies’s life beyond his commercial responsibilities. Amcanu noted that he was utterly devoted to his wife Michelle, held immense pride in his children Aron and Ffion, and took tremendous joy in his role as a grandfather to his young grandchildren, Oakley and Albie.
Davies possessed deep commercial roots in west Wales, having stewarded the family enterprise for more than two decades. The engineering business was originally established in Burry Port in 1975 by his father, Spencer Davies OBE. Owain Davies assumed direct leadership of the manufacturing firm in 2000, steering the enterprise through sustained development in Carmarthenshire.
Colleagues and civic groups highlighted that Davies was a passionate Welsh speaker and a proud Welshman who consistently dedicated his personal time and resources to community causes. Among his major charitable roles, Davies had served as a dedicated trustee of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity since 2017, helping to guide the governance of the essential medical transport service.
Dr. Kyle Jacques, the chair of trustees for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, praised Davies for his substantial service to the organization. He underscored that Davies had made an invaluable and significant contribution to the air ambulance operations and the critical emergency cover it delivers across the nation, remembering him as a cherished colleague and friend whose exceptional generosity of spirit and steadfast loyalty would be sorely missed.
In addition to his support for air ambulance operations, Davies maintained a long history of maritime volunteer work within his home community. Earlier in his life, he spent nearly twenty-five years volunteering as a dedicated helmsman with the Burry Port Lifeboat crew, providing lifesaving coastal support along the west Wales coastline.
A comprehensive inquiry has now been launched in Switzerland to establish the exact sequence of events that led up to the fatal mountain collision. The Swiss Transportation Safety Board has initiated an official technical investigation, working in close coordination with the Valais Cantonal Police and the Office of the Attorney General.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office verified that British diplomatic staff are actively engaged with Swiss authorities regarding the tragedy. A spokesperson confirmed that consular officials are providing dedicated assistance and support to the families of the two British citizens who perished in the alpine crash, reiterating that their thoughts remain focused on supporting the bereaved relatives during this painful period.
